Torrontés

Torrontés

Torrontés is an umbrella term for a variety of white grapes that usually refer to a range of Argentinian grapes, although there is also a Torrontés grape variety grown in Spain , which seemingly has no relation to its South American counterpart.   The three Argentinian varieties are Torrontés Riojano, Torrontés Sanjuanino, and Torrontés Mendocino, of which the former is by far the most widespread, and generally regarded to be of the best quality. Torrontés has been seen as a grape with great potential, sometimes offering highly acidic and aromatic wines, yet sometimes becoming over-alcoholic.   Torrontés Riojano takes its name from its heritage in La Rioja, Torrontés Sanjuanino comes from the province of San Juan, and Torrontés Mendocino is most often found in the area of Río Negro in the south.
