Still have a question?

How do I bid in an auction?

Our auctions take place online, allowing you to browse and bid wherever you are. Once an auction is live, you can explore individual lots, review their descriptions and condition information, and choose those you’d like to bid on.

You’ll need to be signed in to your account and registered to bid. You can then place a bid on your chosen lot, subject to the bidding increments and terms outlined for the auction. You may be outbid while the auction remains open, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the lots you’re particularly interested in.

Once bidding has closed, we’ll confirm whether you’ve been successful and provide details of payment and the next steps for receiving or storing your wines.

How do I sell wine at auction?

Start by contacting our Auctions team. Tell us a little about the wines you’re considering selling and, where possible, provide details including producer, wine, vintage, bottle size, quantity and storage history.

Our specialists will review your collection and advise which wines may be suitable for auction. If you decide to proceed, we’ll guide you through valuation, collection or transfer, inspection and cataloguing before your wines are offered for sale.

Once the auction has concluded, we’ll confirm the results and arrange payment in accordance with our auction terms. Whether you’re selling a few special bottles or a substantial cellar, our team will be on hand throughout to make the process as straightforward as possible.

What does a wine’s provenance mean?

Provenance is the history of a bottle or case of wine, including where it came from and how it has been stored. For collectors, strong provenance can provide valuable reassurance about a wine’s authenticity and condition.

When assessing wine for auction, our specialists consider the information available about its ownership and storage history alongside the physical condition of the bottles. Depending on the wine, this can include examining fill levels, labels, capsules, corks and packaging.

Wines that have remained in professional storage or whose history can be clearly traced may be particularly attractive to buyers. Where relevant, information about condition or provenance will be included in the lot description, helping prospective buyers make an informed decision before placing a bid.

What happens if I win a lot?

Once the auction has closed, we’ll let you know which lots you have won and confirm the total amount payable. This may include the winning bid and any applicable buyer’s premium, taxes or other charges as set out in the auction terms.

After payment has been completed, you can arrange the next step for your wines. Depending on the services available to you, this might include delivery or transferring the bottles to storage in your cellar.

If you win several lots, these can be managed together where possible. Our team is also available if you have questions about payment, delivery or storage following the auction. Before bidding, we recommend reviewing the relevant auction terms so you know exactly which charges and arrangements apply.

What fees do buyers and sellers pay?

The charges associated with buying or selling wine at auction are set out in the terms for each auction.

For buyers, the total amount payable includes a buyer’s premium in addition to the hammer price, along with any applicable taxes, delivery or storage charges. We recommend reviewing these costs before bidding so you can factor them in when deciding how much you would like to spend.

If you’re selling wine, our team will explain the seller’s commission and any other relevant charges before you consign your wines. You’ll therefore know the relevant costs before deciding whether to proceed.

For full details, please refer to the current auction terms and conditions or speak to our Auctions team, who will be happy to explain the charges.
